The AVI Duos are compact, high performance, floor standing speakers designed to complement the AVI Lab Series amplifiers. They have much better clarity, greater focus, more spacious imaging with wider dynamics and improved power handling compared to typical 6.5” two way systems.

While most designers opt for maximum bass extension in this type of design, AVI find that such an alignment distorts the mid-range, makes for a boomy bass range, reduces power handling and increases the risk of mechanical damage to the speaker.  All AVI enclosures are designed to provide bass extension appropriate to the size of the low frequency drive unit, consistent with good power handling and an open, detailed and accurate mid range.  Bass is tight, dynamic, defined and extends much lower than a casual listen might suggest.

The bass driver is from Peerless and has a larger voice coil and better diaphragm than the one in the Pro-Nine-Plus.  Dynamic range and clarity are increased with greater bass extension.  The tweeter is the same Scan-Speak AVI uses in all their Monitor Series loudspeakers.  (after evaluating scores of different tweeter designs, AVI has yet to find a better one).  In short, AVI have used the best components available regardless of cost and worked hard to build them into a highly cost effective system.  As is always their goal, the AVI Duo offers exceptional value for the money!

The most difficult and least understood part of any speaker is the crossover network.  In a two way design both drive units are audible for an octave on either side of the crossover frequency.  If the signal from each driver does not arrive at exactly the same time there will be phase errors that are clearly audible.  These distortions will be avoided by using a Linkwitz Riley Filter with a Q of 0.5.  It has been discovered that flat amplitude response is less critical than accurate phase response in the crossover region.  AVI has perfected a method of achieving this goal, making for a nearly seamless response in their speakers.  It is this aspect of their design that sets the Duo apart from  other speakers.

Because the crossover is inaudible it enables AVI to take greater advantage of the quality of the drive units.  It also allows them to use a lower crossover point.  A 6.5” drive unit will sound far better if the tweeter takes over at a lower frequency.  AVI crosses over the mid-bass driver used in the Duo at 2.5kHz while most other manufacturers are forced to use a 3.5kHz filter.

The result of all this precision engineering applied to the Duo is astonishing clarity, tremendous low frequency control, a superb stereo image and much more natural and realistic reproduction of percussive sounds.

There is no shortage of speakers in the Duo’s class, some are equipped with two bass drivers and are much more expensive, but close listening to them will show that the advantages are dubious and they represent very poor value by comparison.  The Duos are quite definitely outstanding, they more than embarrass some ludicrously expensive alternatives and we urge you to hear them at the first opportunity.

TheDigitalMusicExperts.com think the AVI Duos give the best performance possible from a two-way passive loudspeaker!

The following is a letter received from one of our local clients and was completely unsolicited:

I am writing from the United States and wanted to drop you a line about your Duos. I have had your preamp for almost a year and am still amazed by how well it performs. Until recently I was using it with active monitors from another company. I have always liked the Pro Nine Pluses, but thought they may be too small for my listening room. I have had the opportunity to listen to the Trios and Brios on many occasions and have always found them absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, they are currently out of my price range. That is why I was excited to hear about the Duos. Last week your excellent distributor here in the US let me take them home for a few days and I must say you have another great product. Vocals are one thing that tends to really bother me if they sound wrong and the Duos provided one of the best vocal presentations I have ever heard. Besides giving a great impression of the singer being in the room, they are also very sweet while still being detailed and extended. Even in an 11m x 3m room the bass was pretty deep while still being tight and tuneful. Last but not least, the sound staging was the best I have ever heard in my house. Not only in terms of layering, but also in panning from side to side. I have some albums with some pretty amazing effects on them, and on a few occasions I was actually startled by the movement I heard within the soundstage. I will definitely be purchasing a pair of Duos in the near future, and I look forward to hearing the new amplifier in the coming months.  MR-Royal Oak, MI
