When designing an upgrade to the mulit-award winning Lab Series Integrated Amplifier, AVI had originally intended to offer bridged mono-block amplifiers based on an upgraded version of the stereo power amp stage of the integrated, but with over 500 watts output!  Unfortunately (or is it fortunately?), things are rarely as straightforward as they originally seem.  Increasing the output of the Lab Series Integrated Amplifier to 200 watts per channel (its predecessor had 100 watts per channel output power) had produced a dramatic improvement in sound quality because it reduced clipping significantly.  However, increasing the power to 500 watts made no audible improvement - in fact it sounded slightly worse because of artifacts that occur in bridged designs.  AVI decided that a much higher quality power amplifier was needed so that even bridged it would sound better than the Integrated.  The result was large, very expensive and in stereo form it sounded incredibly good.  Bridging the design still did not appear to give any benefit.  By this point it also became clear that most customers were using speakers that could be damaged by overdriving even with 200 watts, never mind 500!  As AVI developed their accompanying flagship speaker, the Brio, they realized that sound quality was more important than power.  The Brio worked perfectly with the smaller stereo amp, although they could take more than double its power!

In its original form this new power amplifier would have cost twice as much as the Integrated amplifier, and a preamplifier was needed too. AVI’s prior experience had shown that it is necessary to manufacture and sell a product in sufficient quantity if quality and reliability are to be maintained.  Anyone who has experienced “High End” equipment will tell you that it can be extremely unreliable, often seeming as though the owner is doing the development work!  Therefore AVI decided to do a complete re-design to produce the same performance as the new prototype but in the same enclosure as the original stereo power amp, so that it could sell for a similar price.

The development process took eighteen months, but the result was a triumph! The V2.0 power amplifier produces 215 watts per channel and differs from conventional amplifiers in that its distortion remains almost non-existent at low power levels.  Normally distortion should be considered as a percentage of full power, so that at lower levels (where most listening takes place) it becomes a significant proportion of the power being produced.  This is not the case with the AVI S21MA V2 Lab Series Power Amplifier!  This results in a dramatic improvement in sound quality over the hugely successful Integrated Amplifier.  Considering that the Lab Series Integrated has earned multiple Editor’s Choice and Product of the Year awards, as well as its sales success, professional recommendations and owner testimonials, imagining the substantial improvement in performance of the AVI Lab Series separates is a bit difficult.  Fortunately, just one listen makes the improvement obvious!

Here is what one of of our local clients had to say after auditioning the AVI Lab Series in his own home.

Dear Sir,

I am writing to comment on your new amplifier. I was once again blown away. Part of the reason I’m writing, is because I think people should know when they do something right. Plenty of people complain when something is not right. With the new amplifier, there is plenty that is right. I listened on a system consisting of your CD player, pre amp and Duos. I was able to do a comparison between the old and new amplifier, and at first it was a little hard to detect a big difference, but after a while it became clear just how good the new amplifier performs. The first thing I started to notice was all of the subtle details that started to come out of the music. The music seemed to have a much better weight, and complex passages held together so well. I thought I could get a good 3D image with the Duos before, but this time there was actually stuff behind my listening position that was eerily focused and lifelike. But probably the most important thing to me was that the midrange, especially vocals were so clean and smooth. I never really noticed it before, but there is a graininess that I always seem to hear in voices, and this was just gone with the new amplifier. However, not in a loss of detail manner, because as I mentioned before there were plenty of new details I had never heard before. Even on some bright recordings the amplifier retained this ability to sound so smooth and non-fatiguing without losing any of the detail. The new amplifier along with the Duos and my existing pre amp is a system that I can live with for a long time and not need to upgrade any of the components.

Sincerely,

MR - Royal Oak, MI
